An Advisor to Dear Abby

Letter from Dear Abby to Marjorie Maxfield, national wedding etiquette expert and WeddingWire etiquette authority and blog writer

Abby wrote to me immediately after my best-selling wedding etiquette handbook, The Write Stuff: A Modern Guide to Stationery and Weddings, was published in 2009. As  a nationally-recognized etiquette expert, author, and speaker, I advise brides throughout the United States. I own a retail store, Tanglewood Gifts and Stationery, a mainstay in Houston since 1989.

Nearly sixty years ago, Pauline Phillips, a California housewife, sought something more than mahjong and transformed herself into a worldwide syndicated columnist. Abby was also known for her keen and, at times, sharp, wit.
Her obituary in the New York Times, January 18, 2013 recalled several of her editorial gems that ran in her column:
Dear Abby: Our son married a girl when he was in the service. They were married in February and she had an 8 1/2-pound baby girl in August. She said the baby was premature. Can an 8 1/2-pound baby be this premature? — Wanting to Know

Dear Wanting: The baby was on time. The wedding was late. Forget it.

Another gem:
Dear Abby: Are birth control pills deductible? — Bertie

Dear Bertie: Only if they don’t work.

Yet another:

Dear Abby: I have always wanted to have my family history traced, but I can’t afford to spend a lot of money to do it. Have you any suggestions? — M. J. B. in Oakland, Calif.

Dear M. J. B.: Yes. Run for a public office.

Abby was part of the fabric of America’s social culture. What she advised was immediately repeated in offices, homes and car pools. Few received the respect that she commanded from everyday folks to those in high places and in countries around the world.
I could not have have received a higher compliment to have my book in her library as a reference: an advisor to the advisor.
My deepest condolences to her family, friends and followers around the globe. Abby, you truly will be missed!
