Mary-Michael Asks: What are some unique mother-son dance song ideas?

I am the mother of the groom. I have one child who is getting married to the most amazing woman. We are all thrilled. My question is: I can’t find the mother-son dance song that fits us. I have spent hours looking at the songs on the Internet and they are all boring. Can you help? Thanks.

    How about something by Ke$ha?
Truthfully, this is where you need to lean on your vendors. You are paying them not only to play, but also for their professional advice. This is especially true if it’s a band, since they need to play it and play it well and with conviction.
But remember, in the end, guests won’t remember the music (or even how well you danced), they will remember the excitement and warmth.

I can’t tell from your question if you have already chatted with your son and his fiancee about their playlist, reception tone, and plans for the special dances. You might find an obvious ‘fit’ after that conversation.

It may very well be that your son has an inspired idea or a specific sentiment for a song or theme to which the two of you can dance. Or, just asking him about that might pave the way for your own creative inspiration. I do agree with Richard that the band or DJ who has been hired to help might have some fantastic suggestions; but, the most powerful wedding moments are the ones that speak to everyone in the room and, in particular, to the people involve in the ritual of the moment. Good luck!

I have found Spotify very helpful in finding great new songs. Plus you can listen to any song you want for free on your laptop.

While most families do choose something at least a little sentimental, the mother/son dance song definitely doesn’t have to be boring! We’ve had clients select some really different tracks for this special moment in the wedding. Some of our favorites:

Paul Simon: “Loves Me Like a Rock”
Edwin McCain: “Letter To My Mother”
    Jackson 5: “I’ll Be There”
    Bob Dylan: “Forever Young”
Ben E. King: “Stand By Me”

    Hope this helps!

Music is the soundtrack to our lives, and this is a perfect opportunity to set the stage for your musical memory! So go back and think about those special moments with your son and consider what pops into your head. You have a lifetime of memories to explore! It may be a favorite lullaby or movie soundtrack from childhood, or the song that was popular on the radio that he liked to sing along with on your way to school. What song pops into your head when you think of your son? It may not be a specific song, but maybe a style or an artist, and that can lead you to explore options. I remember a wedding where a father brought his daughter to the dance floor and in two measure of banjo at the start of “The Rainbow Connection” three tables of guests burst into happy tears: she loved that song as a kid, and he linked that precious memory of his baby girl into that moment on the dance floor. I’ll never forget witnessing that moment, and neither will anyone in the room when your dance with your son happen – I can’t wait to hear about it and what song you chose!! Congratulations and good luck!
