Kim Asks: What flowers match wine colored bridesmaid dresses?

I am getting married next July in Mexico in a very spanish decor hotel very elegant. I have selected a bridesmaid gown that was called burgandy and when it arrived the color is much more wine very deep color. It is gorgeous but I am worried about putting red roses with it. Since my wedding is in Cancun I am having issues with flower selections. Can anyone recommend colors and types of flowers that would go with this coloring? I am not a fan of yellow or orange. My gown is ivory.

  1. It is probably best to stick with neutral tones especially since you are having a destination wedding and your flower options are limited. Roses come in many different colors. I would say ivory, creams, whites and a natural green would be very elegant and compliment your bridesmaids dresses. Happy planning!

I love to say go with pale colors, cream or pearl white and some green but I am afraid that does not go with your destination location. Mexico is all about colors. My suggestion would be pick exact colors of your bridesmaid’s dresses, not a shade lighter or darker and don’t mix it with anything. Do low and mid size center pieces to give eyes a bit of rest and use lots of candles perhaps votives around and in between your centerpieces. I know Dahlia is Mexico’s official flowers but red Dahlia is not all that so I agree with Lindsey with roses. I hope this helps. Congratulation!

Hi Kim, I agree with Ferinoosh – neutrals are a safe bet but they do not have the vibrant, fun personality of Mexico. However, if you will be on the beach, the gorgeous blue tones of the ocean will be a great backdrop for white and green flowers. If you are going to be inside, dahlias are an excellent flower with quite a variety of colors. If you have a swatch of your bridesmaid dress, I would take it to your florist and have her select the right red for you. Dahlias can be found in lighter cherry red, deep red, and some in plum-red. If you want something more formal, look into mini call lilies.

I say go with fun colors to embrace the tropics that you are in. How about going with burgundy roses, with a mix of light pinks and creams?

Oh, wine color wedding dresses are my favorite for fall and winter weddings. I love to see color-on-color: wine color dresses with a generous bouquet of deep burgundy wine carnations. Carolyne Roehm, the ultimate colorist and designer, in her book, “Fall Notebook,” shows flowers at their best in a color wheel of options. With a little time spend studying, you’ll learn how to select flowers using tone-on-tone, color-on-color, and identify seasonal accent floral colors. Carolyne’s spring and summer books are all masterpieces of floral color.

Marjorie hit it dead on with her thoughts on using a color wheel if you are DIY’ing your planning – you can’t go wrong! Here is a link that you will love: http://www.bestblooms.co.nz/whatcolourdoesthatflowercomein.html

If you have placed your trust in a floral designer then ask to have a planning session with her and bring swatches of each dress the wedding party is wearing (including the mothers) and let the designer do what you hired her to do and show you options.

On a personal note, I think color on color is great with dark dresses-I can’t help it – I like tone on tone balance :) ….

I would recommend that you use several different shades of red – maybe even some tropical hot pink. A variety of shades of the same color adds depth and interest. Neutral colors – creams & whites – may show some bruising & damage in the Mexico heat.
