Eco-Inspiration!

As the new year quickly approaches, and you are probably setting goals and firming up your hopes for your wedding, let’s talk eco-friendly wedding catering options once again.  This is a subject that I LOVE, and some of my personal favorite products have continued to shine as leaders in this market segment, and have expanded their product lines and availability.  My top pick:  VerTerra!

VerTerra dinnerware is made from fallen palm leaves, steam, pressure and heat in an all-natural format.  No chemicals, lacquers or bonding agents of any kind.  Fair wage labor and sustainable production are also utilized making this a guilt-free choice for your wedding reception.  I recently had the pleasure of meeting COO Josh Parker, and I must say, his genuine enthusiasm for the product, the environment, and our catering industry REALLY impressed me.

Available in a variety of shapes and sizes that includes plates, bowls, “small plates”, and even platters, VerTerra is now available at most Whole Foods Markets, as well as in bulk for caterers, making it truly accessible to everyone.  Check out Verterra.com for more information on these amazing eco-products and purchase locations.

Next up:  Aspenware.

You’ll need eco-friendly cutlery to go with your amazing VerTerra dinnerware, and this is the perfect compliment.  Invented by three shop teachers in British Columbia, three years of hard work resulted in the Aspenware Inc, WUN biodegradable cutlery solution to the millions of plastic forks, spoons and knives that end up in landfills each year.  Manufactured in Canada from aspen and birch trees, check here for retailers.

Now you have the dinnerware, and the cutlery to host an amazing eco-responsible reception…what about how you or your caterer transports the food?

Thermohauser Thermo Boxes by SonRidge are the revolutionary ‘green’ alternative to hard-shell insulated containers. Constructed with super durable expanded polypropylene these insulated containers were designed to ensure food safety handling temperatures are maintained in an eco-responsible way.   Did you know traditional food transport containers from top manufacturers can weigh from 17 – 30 lbs each – empty?  According to FuelEconomy.gov, an extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your mileage per gallon by up to 2 percent.  Thus by utilizing the Thermohauser Thermo Boxes, which weigh from 2 – 6 lbs each you or your caterer can actually save on fuel expense reducing your carbon footprint.

I hope I’ve given you some great resources, and inspiration for creating an eco-friendly and green reception as you finalize your wedding plans.  There are so many great green wedding products and sustainable services out there in this burgeoning market!
