Quirky Wedding Details: 4 Tips for Holding the Bouquet

Ah, the bouquet: the floral adornment to the bride as she walks down the aisle, a fabulous prop in photos, a gorgeous accessory that ties the decor and colors of the wedding today. Its also not the type of thing one carries around on a day of running errands or even a night on the town. So its really not that surprising that the bouquet is often found cumbersome and discombobulating. Here are four tips to remember when handling your bouquet (bridesmaids, take note too!)
- You are not Lady Liberty, the bouquet is not a torch. This is the most common default when brides haven’t been demonstrated on how to properly hold the bouquet: holding the bouquet in one fist, with wrist close to the shoulder. Let the sack of potatoes go; relax your arm so your wrist rests near your waist and the bouquet is centered near your belly button.
- Its not American Idol, and the bouquet is not a microphone. It can be semi-terrifying to be the center of attention when you are the bride. But there is no need to hide behind the bouquet; if a slight nod of the head gets a good whiff of the flowers (or even have the petals tickle the nose) the bouquet is being held way too high. Roll the shoulders back, let the arms relax, and think about keeping elbows at the level of the waist with forearms at that same level.
- Odds are you’ll need two hands. At risk of a “that’s what she said” joke, you will probably find that the floral stems of the bouquet will tie together into a rather thick and heavy stalk, requiring the grip of two hands. If this is the case, the florist will most likely wrap the stalk in ribbon to keep it secure. Ask the florist to add one more loop to the ribbon, leaving just enough space for your fingers to slide into the ribbon. It will act like the anchor strap on a ring pillow – giving you a little extra support.
- Practice at the rehearsal. A traditional bridal shower element is assembling a bouquet from the ribbons and bows of the gifts. Take this to the rehearsal and use it! Or grab a bunch of silk flowers. Practice holding and handing off the bouquet. Having time before the wedding to get used to this new accessory will make it second nature on the day of the wedding.
“Happy Marry-making!”
