Ask the Photographer: Do you have Professional Backup Equipment?

We have had the pleasure of meeting with couples that whip out the old “What to ask your photographer” lists found on line. But what we find time and time again is that 90% of the time, the couple will ask the lists questions, but not know the answers. Seems a little pointless to bring the list along if you don’t know what the answers should be. Well, we are here to help. For the next several posts, we will ask the questions and give the answers you’ll want to hear.

Question #1: Do you have Professional Backup Equipment?

Okay, so every list tells you to ask what kind of equipment the photographer is using, but unless you understand what a D3s with a 17-20 and a ST900 stands for, that question is obsolete. A better question is “Do you use Professional Grade equipment?” And even MORE IMPORTANT, ” Do you have Professional Grade Backup equipment?” Many photographers these days have professional equipment (jeez, we hope so) but do your homework because if the photographer you hired drops his camera in a puddle outside the ceremony…. you would want him to grab his back-up camera. I am shocked by how many brides don’t ask us that question. I think it is a far better question than “Do I shoot film or digital?”

The answer you want to hear is YES!

I prefer asking open ended questions because then the photographer (or any other vendor) has to explain it to me in a way I can understand. My second question is usually something like “Tell my how your equipment set up is better or equal to what others offer?”
