What is a Groom’s cake?

You’ve probably heard mention of the Groom’s cake, but many don’t know what it is or if they need one. It is said that Groom’s cakes came to be sometime in the 19th century, in the southern part of the United States. According to legend, the single women attending the wedding were to take a slice home and place it underneath their pillows and they would dream of their husbands-to-be. (it probably also made a great midnight snack)
The early groom’s cakes were said to be mostly fruit cakes, either with or without frosting, but now they are more commonly a chocolate or red velvet cake. For wedding cake traditionalists, they are also a great way to offer an alternative cake flavor to the typical white wedding cake.
Back in the day, they were intended to be a gift from the bride to groom, in modern times the groom often has design freedom over the groom’s cake and can use it to inject a bit of his personality into the wedding. From footballs to golf bags to a simply decorated round chocolate cake, the groom’s cake can be anything you want, although if you are choosing a copyrighted logo (ie. Sports team logo) as part of the design, you should always get permission from the copyright holder.
Sometimes the Groom’s cake serves as dessert at the rehearsal dinner and other times it sits on a table at the reception right next to the wedding cake. It is completely up to you how you choose to incorporate it.
While groom’s cakes aren’t as common is all parts of the country, they can really make for a fun addition to any wedding and they are still a wonderful way to surprise the groom and show him that you appreciate that it is his big day too!
Happy Planning!
