Something Sentimental

Call me super sentimental, but I love, love, love when I am asked to include a family heirloom into the bridal bouquet.  It is a honor to be able to place these very special treasures into the bouquet. The item can be proudly displayed and become a part of the design or hidden only for the bride to enjoy.  I think items of this nature bring comfort and support as the bride walks down the aisle. It also often covers the category of “something Old” or “something borrowed”.

Some of the items I have included in a bridal bouquet are lockets with a particular family members photograph. Antique lace from a mother or grandmother, it can be the lace from the veil or the gown.  The fabric can be put on a wire and inserted between the flowers or wrapped around the stems. Handkerchief’s are another easy item to use, these can simply be pinned onto the stems. One girl brought me 3 different handkerchief’s and she carried everyone of them down the aisle. One mother gave me her daughters baby bonnet, she had worn the bonnet at baptism. We wrapped the stems of the bouquet in the white lace and it was so charming.

I have even included a hand carved peach pit that one brides grandfather carved into a cross. Rosaries are another easy family heirloom to include.  I will use little tiny pearl buttons on the stem wrap for one of my brides this year. The buttons belonged to her great grandmother.  This is such a incredible way to include those who are no longer with and us and to make a statement about the importance of family and tradition.

What sentimental item will you be carrying with you on your wedding day?

Very sweet idea- as long as people don’t take it too far ;) I think it’s great to incorporate tradition and history into such an important day.

Holding my bouquet with an heirloom, lacy handkerchief that was my great grandmother’s. She would be so proud to be there!
