Around mid-winter, you might begin to notice the beautiful raununculus popping up at the flower market. Ranunculus belong to the Ranunculaceae family of flowering plants, also known as the Buttercup family.
Ranunculus are known for their full, multi-petaled blooms in a wide variety of colors including white, pink, yellow, orange, red, and less commonly, green. Brides love these blooms with delicate, paper-thin petals! Though they are not as large as the showy and expensive peony, they are just as lush and may sometimes become a cost-effective alternative. Carrying a bouquet of ranunculus is proclaiming, “I am dazzled by your charms” or “you are in attractions”. The flower originated in the Middle East and the Latin name ranunculus means “little frog”, perhaps because it loves water so much.
There exists a sweet little myth about ranunculus. In fairy tales frogs can change into princes. It is said such a frog-prince once lived in a swampy area, where ranunculus grow naturally. The prince was handsome and loved by everyone. He had a beautiful singing voice and sang openly to the nymphs delighting them with his songs. Though he loved the nymphs, he did not have the courage to declare his love to them; his lack of courage haunting him until he died. After he died, he became a flower with delicate, tissue-like petals. So if you love someone, you must tell her and not worry if you are a frog. You do not want to die a flower in the swamp, no matter how luscious and popular you become with women!
