How early should you book your wedding cake?

Comments Off

You see this one a lot right? Every bridal magazine out there has this question answered for you. Unfortunately it seems that oftentimes this question is answered by someone who read “book your wedding cake 3 months in advance” in another bridal magazine and took it as fact. I see a lot of advice written on this topic and some of it is frightening. The fact is, that on popular dates, the best bakeries are often at their maximum capacity well in advance of 90 days prior. We typically recommend booking your wedding cake 5-6 months prior to your date. You can start scheduling consultations 6 months prior and give yourself a month to meet with a number of bakeries and decide which one of the best fit for you.

Another thing to take into consideration is the popularity of your wedding date. If you are going for one of the really popular dates 07/08/09, 10/10/10, etc you may want to contact potential bakeries as early as a year in advance.

Even if it turns out that your chosen bakery would have had availability just a couple months before your wedding, it’s always a great feeling to have something checked off of your extensive list a little early! There are a lot of brides that lose out on their using their chosen baker by waiting a little too long and I am guessing that you don’t want to be one of them.

So, if earlier is better… why not book 18 months out? Booking too early is no picnic either; a whole lot of things can change in 18 months… your colors, theme, style, even your location. You’ll want to make certain that when you meet with your baker that you have a few ideas of designs that you like and that will fit nicely within your chosen room décor. Having to schedule multiple meetings to make cake design changes because the vision for the reception has changed a couple times just adds more items to your ever growing to-do list and you definitely don’t need that!

It’s always a good idea to give bakeries you are considering a call with your wedding date and ask how early they suggest you book. The good ones will give you an honest assessment of when you can safely book your wedding cake based on your wedding date.

Happy planning!
