Traditions: The Wedding Cake Topper

One tradition I’d like to delve into is the wedding cake topper. There are lots of stories all over the Internet about the roots of this tradition. They range from Roman times to a medieval baker gifting his daughter with a bride and groom figures made from bread. This stuff I guess is kinda cool to know, but unless you’re Roman, or come from an ancient baking family, I don’t think cake toppers would necessarily mean much to you.

Dana Knierim choose a set of elegant monograms for her wedding.

What personally attracts me to cake toppers is the keepsake factor. I know it sounds corny, but when you really think about it, its true. After your wedding is done and over with, your cake topper will be the only decorative element that will remain, and is likely to have a place somewhere in your home. Flowers wilt, invitations, favors, guest books, videos, and most photos get put away- but ah, the cake topper. I guess some would box it away, but I’m sure we’ve all been to a relative or friend’s home and seen their wedding cake topper on display in a curio case. A great personal example of this would be my good friend’s grandmother who was notorious for throwing things away as soon as they were deemed “unnecessary”. Lo and behold, after my friend’s engagement her grandmother presented her with the only memento she saved from her wedding, her cake topper. Now my friend will have not only a wonderful family heirloom, but also a gorgeous vintage topper (circa 1930) for her wedding this June.

A more stylized option for a modern look.

What’s great about this tradition now is that, like most things in the wedding industry, it has evolved significantly from the original cliché plastic bride and groom figurines covered in poofy lace. There are elegant monograms, sleek stylized figurines, and even custom cake toppers that look like you! So have fun, find the topper that “speaks” to you, and be a part of a tradition 2000 years in the making.

Great read! Do you have any thoughts what a couple should keep in mind if the goal is to possibly create a family heirloom? In other words, is their anything that would make a piece more timeless than another?

I couldn’t agree more Carla! Not only does the right topper make a wonderful keepsake, but it really makes the cake look “complete”.

Wedding cakes are not complete without the wedding cake topper. There are so many to choose from it can be overwhelming, but the right topper is a great addition to any good wedding cake.
